BEDLAM
A musical exploration of the dark fascination with ‘madness’ in the Baroque period.
Bedlam transports us to 17th and 18th century Europe, when so-called ‘madness’ was regarded with both fascination and fear, and was a popular theme in the arts. Its title is an old nickname for London’s famous ‘Bethlem Royal Hospital’, a psychiatric facility with a notorious past.
The album presents an unprecedented combination of thrilling operatic arias by Jean-Philippe Rameau, ‘Mad Songs’ of Restoration England by Henry Purcell and John Eccles, and dramatic instrumental works within the theme, including Antonio Vivaldi’s masterful La Follia (‘Madness’) trio sonata.
